Obituary of Ethelbert Holmes
The passing of Ethelbert “Bert” Vernon Holmes, husband of the late Ellen Marguerite (Young), occurred on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at the Veterans Health Unit in Fredericton, NB. Born on December 18, 1921 in Doaktown, NB, he was the son of the late Samuel and Irene (Storey) Holmes. Bert was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 23, Doaktown, NB, the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners. In his younger years he loved hunting and fishing and even guiding along the Miramichi. The fruits of his garden in Lincoln were enjoyed by many. He loved gathering with family and friends to celebrate special occasions and was known for the many dinners he put on for the Salmon Museum and Shriners. His seafood chowder was a favorite. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Bert is survived by his son, David (Sylvia) Holmes of Saint John, NB; daughter, Carol Gilmore (Greg) of Keswick, NB; three grandchildren, Roger Holmes of Saint John, Chris Holmes (Radi), of Houston Texas, and Karen MacDonald (Ken) of Kewick Ridge; four great grandchildren, and several cousins, nieces and nephews. As well, he leaves behind a tremendous group of caregivers at the Veterans Health unit. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by his sisters, Shirley Law and Writa Cone and his brother Samuel Holmes.
Although there will be no visitation by request. A Funeral Service will take place at York Funeral Home’s T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at 11 am with Rev. Bob Jones officiating. Interment will take place at Saint Thomas United Church Cemetery in Doaktown, NB. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
