Obituary of Arthur Appleton

Art passed away peacefully in Fredericton, NB, after a brief illness. He was the son of the late James and Hilda Appleton of Springhill, Nova Scotia. Predeceased by his first wife, Olive (Harris) in 1977, and this past January by his second wife, Eileen (Holt) and his brother, Arnold in 2009. He is survived by his loving children Dorothy (Rick) Vaughan, Jim (Heather) Appleton, Jeff (Shelley) Appleton and step-sons Jim (Heather) Taylor, Larry (Cindy) Taylor, Joel (Ginette) Shaw and Ian Shaw. There was no greater joy for “Grampie” than his family, particularly time spent with his twelve grandchildren: David, Ian, Sarah, Rebecca, Jack, Grace, Adam, Matthew, Jonathan, Sarah, Tanya and Kristen. He is also survived by nine great grandchildren. He will be missed by his in-laws; Howard and Carol Harris, Norma Ryan (late Gerald Ryan), Len and Elsie Peters, Audrey Suttie and their families. Art was born in Springhill, NS and even when he left the town his heart never did. As with many others of his era, he served Canada during World War II as a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force and was very proud to have served his country and loved attending the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo every July. Following the war he began his work life with the Canadian National Railway in Springhill and later in Moncton, NB. The majority of his career was spent as a commercial traveler throughout New Brunswick with Willett Foods, Webster Smith Co. and Hayward & Warwick of Saint John. He truly loved the social aspect of his work and the many wonderful people he encountered over the 30 years on the roads of the Maritimes. He was a proud member of the United Commercial Travelers Association, the Royal Canadian Legion Fredericton Branch, and the Nashwaaksis United Church. Artie spent every summer for the past sixty three years at the family cottage in Pugwash, NS which was his favorite destination, his “perfect” place in the world and his heartfelt passion. This passion became deeply rooted in his children and grandchildren and nothing brought him more joy than family and friends at the shore. He will be missed by his many longtime Pugwash neighbors and friends. Special thanks to Marie Murphy for her many years of care, compassion and friendship; she was loved like a daughter and was a great source of comfort during the past years and particularly in his final months. Further thanks to the caregivers at Windsor Court and his trusted longtime Drs. Tom Barry and Paul Kerr. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB on Thursday, July 11, 2013 from 7 to 9 pm. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #4 are asked to assemble at 7 pm for a Legion Tribute Service. A Funeral Service will be held at the Nashwaaksis United Church, 46 Main Street, Fredericton, NB on Friday, July 12, 2013 at 11 am with Rev. Gil MacKenzie officiating. Interment will take place on Friday afternoon at 3 pm at Fair Haven Memorial Gardens, 1167 Salisbury Road, Moncton NB.
