Obituary of Nellie Gaye McKay

Please share a memory of Nellie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Nellie Gaye McKay passed away at Neill Hall in Fredericton, NB on November 17, 2024.

Nellie was a kind and gentle lady, beloved by all who knew her. She had a deep and abiding faith, and truly shone the love of God to everyone who crossed her path. She had a smile that lit up the room and was remarked on by all who knew her. No matter who went to visit her, her entire face lit up with joy when she saw them. It was common for every caregiver or neighbour or acquaintance to tell the family what an extraordinary lady she was.

Nellie’s faith was front and center in her life, and it guided everything she did. Instead of making her a rigid judge, it made her the most wonderful of women. She loved everyone, she spoke kindly to all and she acted on it. Where there was a need, she worked to fill it. Where someone needed help, she found a way. She didn’t judge, she didn’t lecture, she LOVED. She loved with words, she loved with actions, she loved in silent support. No matter how far someone’s path was removed from Nellie’s beliefs, she acted with compassion and acceptance.

In addition to all that, Nellie loved to laugh. Her children loved to tease her and tell her outrageous stories and her laughter was its own reward. She had a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humour.

Nellie’s love of God flowed through her and made her a wonderful, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved her family completely and fiercely. They were her reason for living. She always thought of them first and herself last. That love was deeply felt and reciprocated.

Nellie is survived by her three sons, Wendell (Bonnie), Randall (Sheila), and Lee (Kristin); as well as her daughter, Jocelyn. Nellie leaves behind her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her sisters Bertie, Maizie, Peggy (Aubrey) and brother Leonard, and many in-laws.

Nellie is predeceased by her husband Rex, parents James and Muriel, sisters Iris, Sadie and Emma; as well as many in-laws.

Nellie’s life will be celebrated at Capital Community Church. There will be a visitation at the church on Sunday, November 24 from 6 to 8 pm. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, November 25 at 2 pm, with a reception to follow in the church. Burial will follow at the Nashwaak Valley Pentecostal Church Cemetery.
