Obituary of Jakealine Anna Meikle
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Jakealine “Jackie” Anna (Simms) Meikle, of Fredericton, NB announce her passing on October 26, 2024, at Riverview Manor in Bath, NB. Born on May 14, 1942, in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Jake and Norah (Heron) Simms.
Jackie is survived by daughters Jean Anne (Richard) Green and Sheila (Tim) Hamilton; granddaughter Jenna Green; brother Allister (Cathy) Moore, sister Fran (Bryan) Knight; niece Darlene Hicks; nephews Stephen Moore, Paul and Chris Knight; several great nieces and nephews; and brother-in-law Doug (Lois) Meikle; nieces Jennifer Meikle and Heather Meikle; nephew Jason (Lucille) Meikle and their daughters. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Sandy Meikle and by her sister Barb and brother-in-law Walter Dominie.
Jackie graduated from the Glace Bay General Hospital Nursing School in 1963 and then went on to complete a Diploma of Public Health Nursing at Dalhousie University in 1964. After marrying Sandy and moving to New Brunswick she nursed for many years in Fredericton at the Victoria Public Hospital, the DECH and York Manor. Jackie was an avid genealogist – scouring records in libraries, churches and genealogy centers while on vacations in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. She made many connections via online genealogy groups with other genealogists and exchanging, correcting, and discovering new information. She was active in local, provincial and national Spina Bifida Associations and supported Sandy in his volunteer work in the community. Jackie was actively involved in her church community at St. John’s the Evangelist church in Fredericton. She loved playing cards, reading, quilting, swimming, travel, and her family.
The family would like to thank all the staff of Riverview Manor in Bath, NB for their exceptional care and kindness.
Jackie asked that this quote be included in her obituary:
“If ever there is a tomorrow when we’re not together, there’s something you must remember ‘You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we’re apart, I’ll always be with you” (Geurs, 1997, 00:06:32).
A Funeral Service will be held at the St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church on Saturday, November 9th at 2 pm with the Rev. Keith Osborne officiating. Interment will take place at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church Cemetery. The family look forward to welcoming guests at a reception to be held at the church hall immediately following the service. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or St. John’s Anglican Church. Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com
