It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Richard William Kimball (Dick) Burgess, of Fredericton, NB. Richard passed away at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital on Wed, Oct 16, 2024, with his family at his side. Born on April 19,1947 in Wesmount, QC, he was the son of the late Helen Burgess (Kimball) of Saint John NB. He was also a special nephew to, and spent many years growing up with his aunt and uncle, Mary “B” & Percy Bridges, in Gagetown NB. In addition to the aforementioned, he is predeceased by his beloved wife of 47 years Patricia (Pat) Burgess (Gilker) with whom he shared a wonderful and full life.
Dick is survived by his loving daughters, Kristin (Andrew Angus) and Karen of Fredericton, and grandchildren, Isaac and Bronwyn Angus. He is also survived by brother-in law Reid Gilker (Audrey), several dear cousins, nieces & nephews, and friends he considered as family. Dick was dedicated to his family, and his two grandchildren were his pride and joy. Always interested, he would provide a warm welcome to any passersby and loved to spin a good yarn with anyone who had the time. He had the opportunity to travel the world, but sincerely cherished his time closer to home with family and friends whether it be on the porch at the lake, at a hunting camp, or sharing in on the latest victory (or loss) at the Capital Winter Curling Club. Always up for a great joke or prank, he has left us with so many fun memories. Our hearts are left full with that deep laugh of his.
Dick attended his early school years in Gagetown and Saint John and later graduated from the UNB Bachelor of Business Administration program in 1970. After graduation, he worked in Peterborough, ON at General Electric. A few years later his family returned home to NB, where he worked for the Province of New Brunswick for over 34 years serving as Assistant Deputy Minister in various departments like Economic Development Tourism & Culture, Supply and Service and Business NB. He lived a life where he valued service and giving back to others. He was an active member of the St. John the Evangelist Anglican church serving on vestry and other committees. He volunteered with his daughters’ ringette teams and therapeutic riding programs, local curling club, and spent many years with the Nashwaaksis Y Service Club. Here you would find him greet you at a community breakfast or at the Club’s annual Christmas tree lot fundraiser; he knew just how to spin a Christmas tree to show off its best side to ensure it sold.
He was a wonderful provider with a kind heart and a fun-loving nature. His loss is felt dearly.
The family wishes to sincerely thank all the staff at the Dr Everett Chalmers Hospital from the ER through to 4SW for the exemplary and compassionate care given to Dick in the last week of his life.
