Dear Family of Roger: I was so very sorry to hear of Roger's passing. While I had only known him briefly, I could see what a wonderful man he is. Roger assisted me with some family research and showed great interest in some historical letters that I have since donated to the Archives. I visited from Ontario and he made time to meet with me and share his knowledge of my family's history in the Fredericton and Scotch Settlement areas. His legacy to the preservation of the history of the area is unmeasurable and invaluable. I will always remember him.
Sincerely,
Gillian Holden

Roger was proof that the “order of good cheer” somehow made the trek across the Bay of Fundy to Grand Manan. Always positive, he debunked the stereotype of historical researchers as bookworms better suited to the recesses of archives and libraries than interacting with people. Generous to a fault, he often spent as much time passing along research leads or tracking information for others as he did pursuing his own interests. Such activities were aided by his sharp memory, always remembering a face, name, or reference source. History, and New Brunswick history in particular, was at the heart of his life. Although he delved in many sectors of employment, his sustained interest in researching and writing about this province on a wide range of topics is borne out by him likely being the contributor to the DCB with the longest span between producing entries. A gracious host with a curiosity for learning, he is a tremendous loss to the heritage sector of NB, his family, and many friends. Travelling with Roger was rarely a direct point A to B journey. His knowledge of the province always led to detours, chance meetings, and discoveries.
Mary and I will miss the laughs, card games, supper dates, talks, research queries, and paths yet travelled. We have lost a wonderful friend.
Mary and Fred

My late husband (Ted) and I met Roger and Nancy when we became neighbours nine years ago. A friendship developed and as
Ted and Roger were both ‘talkers’ many discussions followed covering every imaginable topic (and then some) with Nancy and I often just shaking our heads ! They also supported each through their various health issues and while Ted lost his battle first, Roger continued to fight the good fight with determination, grace and unfailing good humour. I will miss Roger - not only for his coffee making skills but also for his history ‘lessons’ as I am sure he had many more to share. My sincerest condolences are sent to Nancy and her family at this difficult time and may they all be comforted by the many good memories I know they have of their husband, father and grandfather.

Nancy & Family: I have had the privilige of knowing & working with a broad spectrum of society. Roger was one of those with whom it was a real pleasure and I will always remember. He helped me make a real difference in preservation of one of New Bruinswick's and Canada's important historical treasures. My sympathy to you all; Philip Christie (the dairy farmer).

Anyone who has an interest in the history of our area and our province, and especially anyone who’s heard one of his engaging and informative talks in the Keswick Ridge Historical Society’s “History Speaks” series, will share our profound sense of loss at hearing the news of Roger’s recent death. His most recent talk, “A Narrative History of 684 Tripp Settlement Road,” filled the room and the conversation afterward continued for the best part of an hour. Many will remember his presentation on the Kingsclear Reserve Vesesmocs, which he thought might well have been Canada’s first indigenous hockey team, or the time in 2022 he told us about John Hamilton’s invention of the snowplow for railroad engines, or his expansive history of the whole stretch of the Tripp Settlement Road. Always eager to share his immense knowledge of local history, he also occasionally showed us documents – a newspaper clipping about the burning of the original school building, which stood where our headquarters are now, and another about a teacher who worked at the current school for a whole year and hadn’t been paid, and took it to court and won the case. We were always happy to hear, or hear from, Roger. We are going to miss him deeply.

It is a great sadness to hear of Roger’s passing. I too was part of his high school graduating class of 1967. Roger had a smile that lit up any gathering and could always be counted on to add to the fun. Condolences to Nancy and all of his family……a great loss.

We were so sorry to hear of Roger’s passing. Although we had been aware of his health challenges in the last few years he just had such an amazing capacity to recover each time. We knew Roger and Nancy mainly through family members and thoroughly enjoyed seeing him at any functions at the Archives or at Fred and Mary’s home. He had a smile that could light up a room and always added lots to a conversation. Our sincere sympathy to Nancy and family. Hope you will be sustained by many happy memories as well as the love of family and friends. Ann & Terry Brennan

My condolences to the Nason and Brown families. I met first met Roger at a Halloween party in Fredericton back in 1979. He was a dear friend to my brother Fred and sister-in-law Mary. Roger had such a great sense of humour. He really committed to his costume that year. I can’t imagine wearing a pumpkin on my head all evening! I will fondly remember his fun-loving spirit.

Roger was a lovely man. One of those people who made the world a better place just by being in it. He was kind and wise and had a warm and open affect that anyone could see and appreciate. I will miss the possibility of running into him occasionally in downtown Fredericton. My deepest condolences to his family who I hope will take comfort in the high esteem and affection that Roger has left in the wake of his passing.

I am so sorry to hear of Roger’s passing. We shared some great conversations about history. Roger was so knowledgeable. We will greatly miss him as a friend, a guest speaker and as a resource of information.
Even though Roger was not in the.best of health, he always seemed cheerful. It takes a very special person to put aside their troubles and offer their full attention in a conversation. He was a very special person and I will truly miss him.

Condolences Nancy and family at this sad time. Roger and I corresponded in the past, many years ago about the Brown side of the family tree. Like him I have a passion for genealogy. He was able to provide me with information from the 1870's for those who lived on Campobello at the time. I was always grateful for that tidbit of information.
Sincerely,
Heather Leighton Waddingham
