Our deepest sympathy to you and the family, Charlotte. Having so recently talked to you and Les on 4SE at the DECH where Dick was also a patient, we are saddened to learn that his life ended so soon after hospitalization. We remember his good spirits and positive attitude and know he will be greatly missed by his family and friends. May you all be sustained by happy memories.
With our thoughts and prayers,
Richard and Jayne Nicki

Dear Charlotte, Angela, and Susan,
I offer my sincerest, heartfelt condolences during this time of mourning. My thoughts and prayers have been, and will continue to be, with you. May the wonderful memories you cherish ease the pain of your loss, now and in the future.
Lazlo (Les) was one of the first people I met when I joined the CFS in July 1966. He was so friendly and welcoming. My first impressions were: Though he was only about 7 years older than I, he possessed a maturity, a caring genuineness, and a quiet wisdom far beyond mine. Les continued to grow in those precious attributes and more.
We quickly became friends And though that friendship became separated by time and geography it never faded. Over the years, I relished the opportunities to meet, get updated on his life, and talk 'old times' when I was able to visit Fredericton.
It has been my experience, as we go through life, we only meet a handful of individuals who consistently and honestly exemplify 'the manner of man or woman we ought to be'. For me, Les is one of those.
Les will be greatly missed, but well remembered, by all who associated with him.

I was very sad to hear the news about Les. I had the privilege to work with Les at CFS and serve on the Fredericton Tree Commission with him also. Les was my supervisor at the Forest Insect and Disease survey but he was also my mentor, colleague and friend. He was a true gentleman who always greeted me with a smile on his face and a handshake. Les was a great asset to Canada and Fredericton and served them both with humility and pride.
My sincere condolences to Charlotte and family.

My sincere condolences to the family on the passing of Les. Les was one of the first people I met when I joined the staff at Atlantic Forestry Centre in the summer of 1989 and he took me on a little tour to meet some of the Nova Scotia DNR folks. He was always helpful, friendly, professional, and an encyclopedia of knowledge on the Forest Insect and Disease Survey - both the data and the the people who collected those data. And he continued this long after he had retired. Just this March, Les helped me resolve a query from an entomologist/ecologist from the University of Alberta who had a letter dated February 2, 1961, from an Oxford, UK scientist addressed to someone named Fred, no surname, about winter moth and its parasitoids. I did not who the Fred might be but I asked Les and he figured it out. [it was Fred Cuming, a WWII veteran who worked for CFS as a survey entomologist out of the Nova Scotia lab in Truro]. Always helpful and sharp to the end. Les was a wonderful person who cared about his family, friends, colleagues, and community and served them well. He will certainly be missed.
Sincerely,
Jon Sweeney

Dear Charlotte and family,
We’ve fondly held onto our memories of Les over the past many years since we left Fredericton. The news of his passing is heartbreaking. Our deepest condolences to your families. Being in his presence and his conversation was an honour. He brought much comfort and joy toward our time as neighbours and he was a beloved welcome to our day, in which we looked out the window for. We have missed him as was over the last few years and now ever more-so.
Our thoughts are with you.
Love, Sara and family (Ottawa, Canada)

Les Magasi was kind and decent—a gentle soul and a true gentleman. Each semester I try to do justice to Dr. Les’ path from student to freedom fighter to exile to scientist as I share his story with my FHS students.
My heartfelt condolences to Charlotte, Angie, Sue and family.

We were so sad to hear the news. Cousin Laci will be dearly missed by the Mexican/Canadian part of the family. A year ago, we had a lovely time together in their Fredericton home; we are sending our love to dear Charlotte, the girls and grandchildren. We will always cherish the warm and loving times we spend together.
