GEMMELL, DONALD EDWARD

It is with sadness that the family of Donald “Don” Edward Gemmell announces his passing on Monday, June 24, 2024 at home. Born on March 27, 1940 in Sudbury, ON and grew up in Whitefish, ON, he was the son of William and Allie (Crawley) Gemmell.

Don learned to work hard early at his family’s general store. He was a successful businessman joining a Geological Consulting Company as a partner eventually becoming the sole owner, it was only in recent years that he slowed down due to his health issues.

Don’s parents also fostered a strong sense of community. He shared a lot of his time in many ways, coaching his sons’ various sports teams, helping out at the Capital Winter Club and as a member of the Rotary Club.

Don always said he led a full life which he shared with everybody through the many stories he would tell. One could always find him hanging out as part of the Old Kootz at the Lunar Rogue on Thursday’s.

Don is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joyce (Daly) Gemmell; their sons, Mike (Kelly) of Douglas, James (Jennifer) of Ottawa and Rob (Britany) of New Maryland; grandchildren, Morrigan, Patrick, Peter and Portia; brother, William of Sudbury; sister, Karen (Jerry) Wilson of Ottawa; brother-in-law, Frank Gibson and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Joan (Bob) Burton, Alice Gibson and Judith; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Gemmell.  A special thanks to Ann Grant for her friendship and support in his later years.

In keeping with Don’s wishes there will be no visitation or service. For those who wish, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick. Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com
