Obituary of Karen Jay Hammel

 

With profound sadness we announce the passing of Karen Jay Hammel of Fredericton NB which happened on the morning of April 2, 2024 at the Dr Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital in Fredericton.

 

She was born on May 18th, 1956 in Fredericton to Thomas Roland Mockler and Lily June Mockler, predeceased, and is survived by her husband, Karl Hammel; their sons, Charles & Christopher Hammel; also her brothers, Martin Mockler (Tracey) and Jeff Mockler (Linda); as well as numerous members of her extensive family, friends, and former colleagues.

 

Karen grew up with her family in Oromocto. Like her father, she was an avid and competitive curler in high school and shortly thereafter. After graduating, she studied to be a dental hygienist. She returned to Oromocto to work as such and it was during this time she met and fell in love with a young soldier from Ontario named Karl Hammel. They were married soon after on January 31st, 1981 and set forth on their journey of love with excitement and joy. Their path took them across the Atlantic Ocean and back: They were posted to Lahr, Germany with one small child and another would be born in the near future.

 

After four years abroad, they were posted to Toronto, Ontario. Karen would work logistics on base. As time passed, and the children grew, having been posted across Ontario, Karl retired and they moved to Fredericton in 2002. Karen eventually went back to school to pursue her passion for helping children. She began working in the education system, helping troubled youth with their challenges. Karen would retire after years of dedicated work, proud of the good she accomplished.

 

Karen was a devoted wife and mother, who sacrificed for her family and anyone else she regarded as such. We are blessed to have shared time with her, however brief. She loved so much and was loved too well to have passed on so soon. She will be forever in our hearts.
