Obituary of Antonius Joseph Veerkamp

Please share a memory of Antonius to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It’s with Sadness in our hearts to say good-bye to our father Antonius (Anthony) “Tony” Veerkamp. After a brief illness with family at his side he passed away on February 15, 2024, at the Dr. Everett Regional Chalmers Hospital. Born on September 3, 1935, in Nijmegen, Holland. Tony moved to Canada in 1954 where he met his beloved wife, Euphemia “Femy” Scholten. They were married on October 15, 1956. In January 1960 he became a Canadian citizen allowing him to be a great provider to his wife and 8 children. He was a farmhand and bricklayer, before a long career of 33 years from the Agriculture Research Station in Lincoln New Brunswick as an Animal Physiologist. He retired in 1992.

Tony was predeceased by his wife Femy (2008), daughter Alida (Lidy) Sowers (2023), his parents Antonius and Alida (Siemers), brothers Theo and Herman Veerkamp and sister Ineka Broeren (Peter). He is survived by his children Tony Veerkamp, Mary-Lou Mowat (Harvie), Cathy Veerkamp-Wallace (Bill), Irene Veerkamp (Troy Dorcas), Elise Gorman, Nancy Legere (Todd), and Diane Boardman (Vincent). Opa is survived by 12 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and 6 step-grandchildren.

Dad loved reading, playing cards, fishing, hunting, gardening, square dancing, bowling, and traveling. In his career he was very proud of his many accomplishments with the Agriculture Research Station and with having over 200 blood donations. Dad really enjoyed the many family reunions we held. He was happy in his last 4 years living at the Windsor Court Retirement Residence and he participated in most activities held there.

Thank-you for the great care and attention they showed to our father from the Palliative Care unit at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital.

In keeping with dad's wishes there will be no visitation or service at this time. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Douglas Rural Cemetery, Fredericton, NB on Thursday May 30, 2024 at 2:00 pm with Father John Jennings officiating. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the IWK. Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com.
