Obituary of Erna Morton

Please share a memory of Erna to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with heavy hearts the family of Elsie Erna Morton (nee Legere) announce the complicated death of their mother, grandmother on January 29, 2024 at 93 years old after a fall at the DECRH four days prior.

Born June 22, 1930 in Sisson Ridge, N.B. to James and Elsie (Marston) Legere, Erna wasn’t always a senior. She was a young woman excited to live life, marry, have children, and work/ live in a family community. She loved to paint and take day trips with her husband. She was a working mom and worked as a pharmacist for many years. She was like you and I, full of life. She was a person who needed and deserved the help of an embattled healthcare system. A system that also belonged to her.

She was the last member of her immediate family and was predeceased by her husband Harry, son Tommy and Grandson Ian.

There were many dates marked in her lifetime. Most importantly, she married Thomas Hendry Morton(1931- 2021) and brought home four children from hospitals in the coming years. William Morton (Eva), Thomas Morton, Elizabeth Cornford (Dan), and Kathryn Keyes (Greg). Grandchildren Rose, Jane Anne, Ian, Molly, Jacob, Anna, and Brian along with Great Grandchildren Logan and Marlowe were often on her mind.

There are no words to describe the precious care Molly took of Erna in her final days and hours. Molly brushed her Grandmother's hair, assurred her she was okay and that everyone was with her, hopeful her grandmother might somehow know we were there. Molly would wrap Erna’s feet in blankets in a fight to keep them warm. She knew her grandmother hated being cold. She was Erna’s angel. It is from Molly I took strength from when advocating for my mother in her final hours.

Jacob, her grandson, kept us all rolling along with his words of encouragement and was readily available to supply us with all needs.

Dan, her son-in-law, treated Erna as if she were his own mother through so many kind deeds and words.

I could never find the proper words to express how proud of and eternally thankful I am for the three of them. They spent many years helping me take care of both of my parents, and did so by sacrificing their own needs many times. They are good and caring people.

We would also like to acknowledge her friend Joan who kept in touch with Erna on a regular basis. Erna always looked forward to her calls.

We would like to thank Karen PCA for her compassion. The EVS team for their caring and readying of rooms and cots. Dr. Milley for hearing us and helping us. Dr. Cameron for hearing us and taking a chance on tranferring Erna to 3E, Dr. G. McDonald for his excellence in caring, Leesa RN, Emalee RN, all staff of 3E, most importantly Deepa RN. Deepa’s professionalism, knowledge and caring helped us in making my mother’s final hours both dignified and peaceful. As per direction, a private interment service will be held at a later date. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Personal condolences may be offered through
