Obituary of Barbara Jean Knappe

It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Barbara Jean Knappe of Fredericton, New Brunswick, which occurred on October 17, 2023 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Born on October 25, 1939 in Moncton, New Brunswick, she was the wife of the late Alfred Knappe, and the daughter of the late Helen (Manning) and Rudolph Lauder.   

Barbara is survived by her children, Jeffrey Knappe (Nancy) of Quispamsis, Michael Knappe (Sophia) of West Bloomfield, MI, and Kelsie Shaw-Gorman (Kevin) of Fredericton; grandchildren Sarah, Charlotte, Sabrina, Satta, Michelle, Melodie, Seleste, Aaron, Meghan, Kirsten, and Kaitlin; great grandchildren Sophie and Gracelyn; brother, Dale Lauder; along with many nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband and parents, Barbara was predeceased by her sisters Claire Barkhouse and Shirley Hebert. 

Barbara’s perpetual smile and kindness, always with a sparkle in her eyes, brought sunshine to everyone she met. Barb worked as an elementary teacher at Nashwaaksis Memorial and Royal Road schools for most of her career. She was an avid crafter including quilting, sewing and knitting, and after retiring, was active in the retired teachers group, and with the WMS at church. 

A special thank you to the staff of Windsor Court retirement residence for the wonderful care they’ve provided over the past seven years, and to the Chalmer’s staff that went out of their way to make her last days more comfortable.

Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton on Friday, October 20, 2023 from 6 – 8 pm.  The funeral will take place at Nashwaaksis Baptist Church, 104 Edgewood Drive, Fredericton, NB, on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at 11 am with Chris Bennett officiating. Following the service, interment will take place in Gray’s Island Cemetery, Hillsborough at 4 pm. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada. Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com.
