Obituary of Doris Verna McGivney

Please share a memory of Doris to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with great sadness the family of Doris Verna (Estey) (Hazlett) McGivney, announce her peaceful passing at the Dr Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital on August 31, 2023. Doris was the wife of the late Charles W. McGivney (2014). Born on May 9, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Ross and Gladys Estey. Sadly, her birth mother passed at a very young age. She was raised by her father and stepmother, the late Glenna Estey, whom she considered as her mom and who was our Grammy.

Left to cherish her life are her children, Debbie Farrell (Harry), Terry Hazlett (Karen), Tommy Hazlett (Lori) and Jeannie Stewart (Rick); grandchildren, Dacia, Courtney, Cody, Ashley, Sayard, Kyle, Amanda, Teri-Lyn, Virginia; great-grandchildren, Madison, Amelia, Connor, Hank, Dougie, Rex, Kota, Karter, and Marcail. She is survived by her sister, Donna Murdock; her brother, Dale Estey (Shelia); sister in-law, Lorraine Fullerton (Paul); as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mom was predeceased by our father, Sterling Havelock Hazlett Jr (1957); infant son, Sterling Eric Hazlett; brothers, Eugene, Merle, Russell and George; sisters, Georgie and Anna; infant granddaughter, Holly Jean; and infant great-granddaughter; Charlie Elizabeth.

Our mother, the matriarch of our family, will be missed dearly but will be affectionately remembered for her independent nature, determination, strength and very giving nature, A self-taught seamstress who worked many years in the dry-cleaning business where she sewed and managed the depot, mom was quick to learn and very capable of taking on demanding tasks. Her favorite expression was “I’ll do it”!

Mom enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening, baking, doing preserves, reading, listening to gospel music and dancing. Mom enjoyed having her grandchildren for sleepovers, many times all of them at once. She was an avid curling fan, staying up into the wee hours of the morning to watch the last rock thrown. Our Mom was a woman of strong faith who continually prayed for her family and read her bible daily.

Our sincerest heartfelt appreciation is extended to Extra Mural, the team of Doctors, Nurses, and staff of 4NE, 3E, 4E and 3SW who cared for our mom during her long stay at the DECRH. A special thank you to her family physician, Dr. Peter Dickenson, who took such excellent care of our mother the past five years. Your compassion and care never went unnoticed. You are all “Earth Angels”.
