Obituary of Albert Byron Jewett Gordon

Please share a memory of Albert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with great sadness that the family of Albert Byron Jewett Gordon, of Jewetts Mills, announces his passing on Saturday, August 19th, 2023 at Pine Grove Nursing Home at 81 years of age.  Albert was the son of the late Stewart Gordon and the late Hannah (Jewett) Gordon.

Albert is survived by his wife of 56 years Dawna (Jackson) Gordon and his older sister Mary (Gordon) Cain.  He was Dad to his children, Susan Goodine (Don), Andrea Clark (Eric), Kirby Gordon (Katharine), and Jacqueline Durnford (Dion).  Albert was Papa to grandchildren Lorne Goodine, Joe Goodine (Amy), Jesse Clark, Skyler Clark (Maddy), Shane Clark (Kelly), Adam Gordon (Melissa), Benjamin Gordon, Joshua Gordon, Melissa Gordon, Emma Morehouse (Conor), Ashley Morehouse (Robie), Dana Durnford, Dax Durnford, and great-grandchildren Xaviar Johnson, Elle Goodine, Anna Goodine, Jorja Clark, Jaska Clark, Kinsley Clark and Kendrick Clark. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

For many of Albert’s working years, he was a school bus driver and shepherded hundreds of students throughout that career on bad roads, snowstorms and trying situations. He knew the students’ names, who their parents and their grandparents were in case they needed to be dropped at a different location. Albert spent much of his free time working in the sawmill he built and running his hobby farm raising sheep, pigs, cattle, and horses.  Many hours were spent in barns and fields over his lifetime, and he was happiest in the outdoors. For many years, he was involved in harness racing. He would surprise many in the community when he rehabilitated horses in the Mactaquac headpond by swimming them for exercise while being towed in an inner tube. He enjoyed playing cards and being with friends, participating in many cribbage tournaments or raucous games of 31’s during family get-togethers.

Albert was very resourceful, and could make almost anything work. He was not that focused on aesthetics, just function! His tractor may have required a screwdriver to start it, but it always worked. Albert was a family man above all: a husband of 56 years, an ever-present Dad, and a Papa who took great delight and incredible pride in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Albert was a great friend to many and a neighbor that could always be relied upon. There wasn’t much he wouldn’t do to help out whenever there was a need. And, there was nothing he liked more than to tease people and bring laughter into a room.  He was well known for the phrases he applied to situations, and that vocabulary will always bring a smile with his memory.

A special thank you is given to the staff of Pine Grove Nursing Home for Albert’s excellent care during his stay, as well as to Albert’s sitter, Chris Durelle. The family will be forever grateful that his final years were filled with compassion and nurturing by the team at Pine Grove.
