I first met Bob in the 60s during my second posting to Portage. We were in those days sometimes outrageous as my wife Fran would say at parties in our Neighbourhood. We lived a couple of blocks away. After Portage our careers took different paths that crossed at times for the next decade until Bob retired. Being fellow Maritimers we always were kindred spirits that meant you always seemed to get news of each other through the ATC grapevine. I had always wished to join Bob someday on “The River” to take a legendary Miramichi Salmon, but it sadly never happened. Maybe in the future I will join his spirit to cast a fly and share hijinks again. Rest in Peace Old Friend, you are remembered.

Robert Lawrence Hickey, humorist, friend, controller, pilot and all around great guy. My years spent with him in Gagetown were periods of jocularity interspersed with others of high humour. Bob had a refreshing way of looking at life and there was never, ever a dull moment. Hijinx were the order of the day and he was a bonafide character of the old guard. Every day at work was an uplifting experience, replete with his pithy observations on life in general and on the military in particular. I recall a field trip to the training area in Gagetown when two of us were tasked with 'acquiring' Christmas trees for those in the unit that wanted them, an activity frowned upon by the commanders. We took the section ruck and off we went. We inevitably got stuck and a passing helicopter picked us up and brought us home. Later that afternoon we went back to the scene of the crime with a much larger truck and recovered the vehicle from the morning's escapades. The Army kicked up a ruckus about this but Hickey went to bat for us and assured the boss that this would never happen again. We walked out of the office as legends and Bob leaned over and quietly informed us that there was little he loved better than a drive in an Army truck through trackless New Brunswick bush and we were directed that we would take him with us the following year. Only Bob. Nothing more was ever said about this except around a campfire where the telling of the tale was much embellished. He will be missed by those of we younger and impressionable folks that knew him and fondly remember him with great respect. PER ARDUA AD ASTRA

I had the priveledge of Bob working for me in Portage la Prairie in the early 70s and again later when he was an Air Traffic Controller in Gagetown. A pleasure to be in his company, always happy and helping others. He loved flying in helicopters in Gagetown and became quite proficient in this area. Fond memories of the good times we shared. RIP Robert.

Dad I still can’t believe you are gone. You were one hell of a guy and an amazing father. You raised me to be myself, a strong independent woman. Even though we lived so far away I cherish the last time we had the chance to visit you an Ila. Deep down inside I knew as I saluted you boarding the plane this may be the last time we see one another. God you were funny! . You spoiled me rotten as a kid, and you were an amazing role model. I too joined the military, and was a reservist for 12 years. Some of my favourite memories… catching one of the biggest salmon the “River” has ever seen with you. Being your co-pilot when you went flying. Crashing the snowmobile into a tree and all you cared about was if I was hurt or not. I could go on and on. The stories you would tell omg hilarious. I will never sto missing you Dad and I can still here your voice calling me “Weezie”
Love always

I was saddened to hear of the loss of your dear Bob. He obviously had a life well-lived. My dear late mom had such happy memories of her time at Hickey’s Pond where Bob grew up. While he left too soon, I pray you have some comfort knowing you had such a good life together. Much love and prayers as your journey continues. Anne

Feeling very sad to learn of Bobby's passing. We were in same class gr7-grade12; he was not the class clown but he was the mischievous one always keeping us chuckling. I don't think he ever said or did a mean or hateful thing to anyone in all those years. It was good to read about his life as one always wonders about the lives of classmates after high school and I have no doubt he was a nice a man as he was a young fellow!

Dad I still can’t believe you are gone. It was a crazy roller coaster ride at the end and I wish I could have said goodbye. Being so far away from you has never been easy and I wish we had more time together. You were the best father I could have asked for, you spoiled me rotten and let me be me. I will always Cherish the memories we made and the laughs we had on our last visit. Love you
