FLETCHER, SADIE MATILDA (NEE FAWCETT)
It is with great sadness as well as gratitude and appreciation for the life “well lived” that the family of Sadie Matilda Fletcher announce her passing which occurred on Sunday, February 5, 2023 at her home, 110 McKnight Street, Fredericton, NB, with her family by her side. Born in Pokiok, NB on April 27, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Ethel (Major) Fawcett. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Sadie was a loving daughter, sister, wife and mother of four children, Sharon Hicks (Clyde) of Moncton, NB, Linda McCready (the late Robert) of Saint John, NB, the late Cindy Eagles (John) and, Heather Fletcher Switzer (the late Doug S.) of Fredericton, NB; grandmother to five grandchildren, Stephen Hicks (Denise), David Hicks (Bruce Ryan), Shane McCready ((Maura DuLong), Michael Hicks (Darlene) and Jenny Lunney (Mark); great grandmother to eight great grandchildren, Wren, Megan, Kyana, Darcy Jane Hicks, Maxine Hicks, William and Lane McCready, and Ireland Lunney; one great great granddaughter, Sophie Grace McFarlane, all of whom she loved dearly, saw frequently and spoiled on a regular basis, and will be missed sadly by all.
She was fond of quoting that she was at “95” the “Matriarch” of her family and of the apartment building at 110 McKnight Street, where she had resided for the last 26 years. Over the 95 years of her life, she had made many wonderful friendships, which helped sustain her in the years, following her husband’s passing, Gordon W. Fletcher in May, 2004.
As well as her husband of 59 years, Gordon, she was predeceased by her parents, her beloved brother, Walter Fawcett (WWII); her dear in laws, Frank and Estella Fletcher; her 3rd daughter, Cindy and her husband John; her sons in law, Robert McCready and Doug Switzer, and at 95 years of age, many others of her generation.
Sadie was a wonderful homemaker, a caring wife, mother, grandmother, friend, who enjoyed knitting, reading, puzzling, playing games (which she often won), and shopping and eating out at every given opportunity. She was admired for her “strength” of character in good times and bad her kindness and even in her later years, always remembered Birthdays, Anniversaries etc., and was “generous” beyond words to her family and friends; she will be remembered as one who never shook hands but preferred “HUGS”. She has left a legacy of five generations of family who knew, loved and admired her, and being a woman of faith journeys onward to Heaven to join her loved ones that have gone on before her. God Bless You and Keep You Mother dearest.
There will be a Memorial Service at York Funeral Home’s T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB on Friday, February 10, 2023 at 2 pm with Rev. Dr. Roger Graham officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Personal condolence may be offered through www.yorkfh.com
