Gladys Averil (Meating) Murphy (1934 –2023)

The peaceful passing of Gladys Averil Murphy of Fredericton NB, wife of the late Robert (Bob) Murphy took place January 16, 2023 at Hospice House, Fredericton, NB. She was 88 years young. Born on September 11, 1934 in Saint John NB, she was the daughter of the late Horace and Elsie (Ross) Meating.

Anyone who knew Gladys would agree that she was a shining light and always lent a helping hand. She was a long-time member of St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church in Nashwaaksis, where you could often find her volunteering on the Altar Guild, or making the annual apple pies. For the past year and a half, Gladys lived independently at Shannex Fredericton, where she flourished with her new friends. She was always the first to sign up for any fun outings!

Gladys is survived by her children: Dr. Bruce Murphy (Tracy) of Chicago, ILL; Dianne MacKay (Jamie) of Harvey, NB; granddaughter, Teagan Murphy; and sister, Eleanor Richard of Saint John, NB; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Gladys is predeceased by her daughter, Sandra Lee Murphy; grandson, Seamus Murphy, sister, Elsie Phillips, and brothers, Horace and Kenneth Meating.

Visitation will take place on Friday, January 27 at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB from 3-6 pm. A Memorial Service will take place at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, Fredericton NB on Saturday, January 28 at 2pm with Rev. John Galbraith officiating. Interment will take place at Oceanview Memorial Gardens, Saint John, NB at a later date.

The family would like to send sincere and heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Hospice House. From the nursing staff to the kitchen staff (and Michelle’s home-made ginger snap cookies!), and the volunteers, mom and our family were always treated with the utmost caring, dignity, and respect. You are all angels, and we thank you for all you have done for us in the past month.

For those who wish, donations to Hospice House Fredericton, St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, or to a charity of their choice.  Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com
