Obituary of Myrna Marie Sweeney

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Myrna Sweeney of Durham Bridge, NB, Myrna passed on Friday, January 13, 2023 at Hospice House Fredericton with her daughter by her side after a short, courageous battle with aggressive colon cancer. She was born in Fredericton, NB to the late Fred and Ethel (Reid) Sweeney on August 3, 1960.

Myrna is survived by her only child, her daughter, Cheryl Sweeney and their beloved family dog Mocha as well as her sisters, Jocelyn Sweeney (Len Bennett) of Nashwaak Village, Lori Deuville (Tom) of Saint John and brothers, Gene (Linda) of Saint John, Michael of Fredericton and Darren of Durham Bridge. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and colleagues at the Fredericton Superstore on Smythe. In addition, she is survived by her chosen family that were her friends. She was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Dianne Sweeney; brother-in-law, Tony Lint and many fur babies the most recent of which was their beloved family cat Punkin (March 2022).

Myrna loved going to bingo especially at St. Mary’s Entertainment Centre and in recent months playing online and radio bingo with Cheryl. She was an avid sports fan who enjoyed watching the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Team Canada Juniors and especially her beloved Toronto Blue Jays. She especially enjoyed going to watch games in person in both Toronto and Montreal. She also enjoyed watching her soaps. Myrna and her daughter loved to travel together and visited New York, Toronto, Niagara Falls, Montreal, Nova Scotia and had many shopping trips to New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts. Myrna’s favourite place to visit was her mother’s birthplace on Prince Edward Island, where she would visit yearly. They also enjoyed watching their favourite shows together including 90-Day Fiancé, Hudson and Rex, Hallmark movies and mysteries to name a few.

Thank you to the staff at Extra Mural who helped Myrna stay home as long as possible. As well as to all the other nurses, doctors and support staff throughout her journey. Finally, a thank you to all staff at Hospice House Fredericton for making her comfortable in her last day.

There will be no visitation or funeral service. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2023, between 2-4 pm at the Nashwaak Valley Recreation Center, 679 Highway 628, Durham Bridge, NB, E6C 1J3. Another celebration of life will be held at a later date and time this summer on Prince Edward Island. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Victoria's Quilts Canada (VCQ), Extra Mural, Hospice Fredericton (Palliative Care Resource Network Inc.) or the Fredericton SPCA.
