MacDonald, Dorothy Mina

The family of Dorothy Mina (Crawford) MacDonald of Douglas, NB announce her passing on November 1, 2022 at Paradise Villa, at the age of 95. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, John Arthur MacDonald, in 2010. Born on June 15, 1927 in Newcastle Creek, NB, she was the daughter of the late Maude (Smith) and Everett Crawford.

Dorothy and John lived in Douglas for all their married life, except for six years at the Crawford homestead in Newcastle Creek, where they took care of Dorothy’s ailing parents until they passed. Later, Dorothy worked as a Resident Nurse Aid at York Manor for twenty years. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Fredericton, and she and John volunteered at the Fredericton Food Bank for many years. After John’s death, Dorothy moved ‘across the road’ to Paradise Villa, being one of the first residents in the new seniors’ retirement home, and she was then taken care of by the wonderful staff there.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Joy McCune of San Diego, California; son, J. Douglas MacDonald (Deborah) of Fredericton; grandchildren, Nicholas McCune, Heather Quintero (Guillermo), Jonathan MacDonald (Alicia) and Natalie DuBois (Joshua); great grandchildren, Afton, Jack, Ivy, Croy, Kaes, and Lou MacDonald; Aiden and Sarah DuBois; Noa and Gia Quintero; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her sisters, Thelma Libby, Ruth Cunningham, Marion Smith, Bernice Heustis, Effie Bridges, Laura Bridges; brothers Lorne Crawford, Donald Crawford, Norvin Crawford, and infant brother, Clifton Crawford. She was the youngest of 11 children of Maude and Everett Crawford.

Dorothy and John welcomed many family and friends to their home on Pearl Street over the years. She was an amazing cook/baker, seamstress, knitter and quilter. She enjoyed a properly made cup of tea, hosting family and friends, following the royal family, a beautifully set table, sitting in her sun porch with the newspaper, and a loaded clothesline. She provided well for her children and grandchildren, and was very generous. She and John took a few vacation trips, including a tall ship adventure on the Caribbean and a trip to Wales and England.

The family would like to thank the staff at Paradise Villa for their tender care and compassion for our mother/grandmother over the past ten years. They have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

A burial service will take place in Newcastle Creek Baptist Baptist Cemetery on Sunday, Nov 6th at 1 pm. For those who wish, remembrances in Dorothy’s name may be made to Newcastle Creek Baptist Church, 7 Wharf Road, Newcastle Creek, NB, E4B 2J8.
