Gladys McKay

Obituary of Gladys Lea McKay

UPDATE - THE CELEBRATION OF LIFE  will be held on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 from 6-8 pm.

The passing of Gladys Lea McKay of Fredericton, NB, occurred on Saturday, October 15, 2022 at 11:56 pm at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital, Fredericton, NB. Born in Scotchtown, NB on July 31, 1953, Gladys was the daughter of the late Melbourne and Annie (Golden) Scott.

Gladys loved her family, grandkids and kids, followed by her love of crafts and gardening. She found great joy and pride in growing and creating things with her own hands, especially her multimedia crafts. She had a passion for flowers and nature, feeding the birds and the squirrels and in her younger years she was a competitive dart player and bowler.

Gladys lived her life to help and serve others. She was the Owner and Operator of McKay’s Special Care Home (formerly Scott’s). There was a great joy she felt in helping the people in need. She absolutely adored Christmas, as she spoiled her kids and grandkids. She had an odd and sometimes twisted sense of humour, silver tongue and quick wit.

Gladys is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, Derrick McKay; her daughters, Victoria (Mitch Wright) and Erica (Peter); her son, Josh (Lita); her sister, Anne (Laurel); her grandchildren, Shelby, Samantha, Jacob, Matthew and Sarah; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, John, Bill and Al; her son, Kenny, a loss she never truly healed from.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to all of her caregivers at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital, with a specific thank you to Dr. Thomas Barry, her family doctor of over 40 years, for everything he has done, above and beyond for the McKay family, and as well to Dr. Anan and Dr. Swan of the Oncology department.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Thursday, October 20, 2022 from 6-8 pm at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Chalmers Foundation (Oncology Unit). Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com
