Obituary of Rae Stephen Hopper

Please share a memory of Rae to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Rae Stephen Hopper passed away peacefully on November 20, 2025, at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born on October 28, 1941, to Stephen and Bertha Hopper, Rae built a life defined by hard work, curiosity, and a kind, generous spirit.

Rae worked for many years as an electrician at the Fredericton Research Station, and after retiring he continued to share his skills through his own electrical business. His love of tinkering and fixing things was not only his profession but also one of his greatest joys. A dedicated ham radio operator, Rae firmly believed in the old saying, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” and he could often be found bringing new life to items others might overlook. He was also an active member of NAFR, serving on its board for several years.

Rae is survived by his loving wife, Barb (Hicks), who will miss him dearly; his sons Bob Francis (Alexandra), Michael Francis (Libby), and Mark Francis; and his granddaughters Lauren, Gillian, and Isabel. He is also survived by his brother Harry (Elsie) and his sister Susan Purdy (Don).

He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Dale, and his sisters Carol Hall and Betty Lewis.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to all who cared for Rae over the years. The oncology staff, Extra-Mural team, and palliative care team offered exceptional kindness, support, and compassion.

In keeping with Rae’s wishes, there will be no funeral. A celebration of life will be held in the spring in Salisbury, with a graveside service to follow at a later date.

For those who wish, donations in Rae’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Fredericton SPCA Personal condolences may be shared through www.yorkfh.com.
