Joan Marie Thomas 1940-2025
It is with heartfelt sadness that the family of Joan Thomas (Vanderbeck) announce her passing that occurred at Hospice House, Fredericton NB on Tuesday, October 7, 2025. Joan was born in Millerton, NB on August 8, 1940.
She will be deeply missed by her brother Burton Vanderbeck (late Alice Vanderbeck), sister Eleanor Mollegaard (Leif), son Bradley Thomas (Shelly Monroe), daughter Sandra Demerchant (late Peter Demerchant), grandson Blake Thomas Archibald (Nadia), granddaughter Bailey Demerchant, and grandsons Victor and Jeremy Chabot. Niece Peggy Couglan (Steven), nephews Leslie Vanderbeck (Kathy), James Vanderbeck (Sheryl), Scott Vanderbeck (Ciara).
Joan was predeceased by her husband of 62 years Richard L.W. Thomas, her daughter Susan Chabot and her parents Randolph and Anna Vanderbeck.
Her "home on the Miramichi" was always near and dear to Joan's heart. She will be remembered for her kindness, faith and determination. Her life was deeply rooted in love for family, and she hosted too many special holiday meals to count. Her home was always open, table set and welcoming. She was a long-time dedicated member of the Nashwaaksis United Church and really enjoyed being part of the United Church Women (UCW). Her faith was strong and without a doubt helped manage her cancer sickness. Joan volunteered at York Care Home for 17 years.
The family would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all the kind, compassionate caregivers at Fredericton Hospice House over the past two weeks. Thank you also to the nurses of 4NE at the DECH for Joan's prior care.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 14th at 1 pm at York Funeral Home, Brookside Drive, Fredericton NB. A private family interment will take place at Douglas Rural Cemetery where she will join her beloved husband, Richard. Donations may be made to the Fredericton Hospice House, Nashwaaksis United Church or to the charity of the donor's choice. Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com.
