Barbara Nellian Alward

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Barbara Nellian Alward (nee James), on October 3^rd, 2025. After a long life and brief illness, she has now gone to be with her Lord and Savior.

Barbara was born in Surrey, England, on July 29^th. 1928, and spent her early years in the London area. As a war bride, she came to Canada after marrying Larry Alward, making it her home and settling in the Minto area, they later moved to Fredericton and raised their three children – Martin Alward (Linda Lewis), Carolyn Lapointe (Bernie), and Maxine Ackerson (Glen).

Barbara is survived by her daughters Carolyn Lapointe and Maxine Ackerson, and her sister-in-law Elinor James (U.K.). She will also be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Carl Petit (Alena), Helen Morgan (Jason), Rachel MacNally (Misael Abreus), Amy Elliott (Gary), Charles MacNally, Jane Urquhart (Tony), and Clayton MacNally (Jill), as well as her great-granddaughters Natalie Elliot, Madeline MacNally; great-grandsons Caleb Urquhart (Michele Hynes), Ryan Elliott, Mateo MacNally, Luke Urquhart, Zann Petit, Ben MacNally, and Arlo Petit. Barbara also leaves behind dear friends Nawal Youssef and Jane Buckley, as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents Nellian and Edward James, her husband Lawrence (Larry) Alward, her son Martin Alward, her brother Brian James, and son-in-law Bernie.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 10^th, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at The Drive Baptist Church, Greenwood Drive, Fredericton, with Pastor Gordon Cook officiating. As per her wishes, her body has been donated to Dalhousie University Medical School.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the caring staff of Paradise Villa, where Mum lived happily – and was lovingly “spoiled” – for nearly 12 years, and to the compassionate team at York Care Home, where she spent her final months. Your kindness and attentive care meant the world to her and us.
