Obituary of Peter DeMerchant

The family of Donald “Peter” DeMerchant wish to announce his passing on September 18, 2025 at Hospice Fredericton.

Peter is survived by his wife Sandra DeMerchant; his two daughters; two grandchildren; brothers, William (Betsy) and Paul (June). Predeceased by his parents; Donald and Elizabeth DeMerchant.

Peter was born in February, 1967 in Perth Andover, New Brunswick. He grew up in Nashwaksis. Peter graduated from Fredericton High School, went on to obtain a welding certification from the New Brunswick Community College and later a BBA from the University of New Brunswick. He was employed by Caldwell & Ross Limited for more than 20 years before embarking on a career in real estate and land development forming his own company; D.P. Developments Ltd. and in such facilitated the building of Cuffman Street Elementary School along with several other housing developments in the Northside area of Fredericton.

Peter keenly looked forward to his card nights with his buddies. He loved to kayak at his cottage on Yoho Lake and enjoyed a good game of golf. Traveling to see NFL games with brother Bill and friends was also very fondly remembered. He valued family connections and friendship.

Peter bravely faced his diagnosis and long fight with brain cancer. His wicked sense of humor throughout supported and comforted family and friends in his final days.

The family would like to thank everyone that helped during the course of his illness and his time at Hospice House; the drives, outings, many visits and treats were greatly appreciated. Thank you to all the Doctors, Nurses and staff at Hospice that made his time there so comforting.

As per Peter’s wishes, upon his passing his body was donated to Dalhousie University in support of medical education and research.

The family invite loved ones and friends to a celebration of his life at the Nashwaksis Lions Centre on Killarney Road to take place on Sunday September 28 from 2-4 pm.
