Peter Stanley McLaughlin 

March 22, 1959 - August 30, 2025 

 

The family of Peter Stanley McLaughlin, of Fredericton, are saddened to share news of his passing on Saturday, August 30, 2025, after a long and difficult battle with complications from diabetes.

Born in Fredericton on March 22, 1959, Peter was the sixth of the late Stanley and Madeline (Doherty) McLaughlin’s seven children. In addition to his wife Cathy (Richard), his two sons Matthew and Samuel, and grandson Bentley, Peter is survived by his brother and sisters Diane Fraser, Paul (Monique), Judy Blinn (Jim), Cathy Cogswell (David), Lynn Phillips, and his nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his parents, his brother David, his brothers-in-law Bruce Fraser and Mark Phillips, his niece Sara Janes and his nephew Gregory Phillips.

 

Peter McLaughlin was a character, sometimes larger than life, often hilariously funny and charming. He was generous with his many skills and time, never failing to answer a call for help. His life, for those who witnessed much of it, reads like something even Kurt Vonnegut might have struggled to imagine.  At the heart of it a kind and simple man, he was happiest when working with someone, and very proud of what his hands could do. He loved his work, and he loved one woman for his whole life. He loved his sons and his grandson. He was fairly certain John Prine was expressing his own deepest thoughts.
