Obituary of Jeanne Marie McGrath

McGrath, Jeanne M.

Jeanne McGrath, nee Bass, age 84 of Fredericton, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at Hospice in Fredericton, NB after a short battle with cancer.

Born on November 14th, 1940, in Fredericton, she was the second child, and only daughter of, Marguerite and (William) Blair Bass.

Jeanne grew up in Saint John, NB, where she attended Holy Trinity Elementary School and Mount Carmel Academy.

Jeanne worked for the Canadian Red Cross Blood Services in the 1960s. She married James McGrath of Saint John on September 9, 1967.

Jeanne is survived by her brother, Daniel Bass (Fran) of Saint John, NB; her three children, Michael McGrath (Michelle Barrette) of Victoria, BC., Kerry McGrath, of Fredericton, and Bridget Book of Makakilo, Hawaii. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Ethan, Yvette (Yvie), and Torin McGrath of Victoria, BC. Colter McGrath of Fredericton, and Noah and Maggie Book of Makakilo, Hawaii.

Jeanne is predeceased by her husband, James, and her brother Gordon Bass.

Jeanne was blessed to have cultivated deep, family like friendships with multiple generations of people she encountered. She was a proud and caring mother, and grandmother, and enjoyed a career as a librarian, first at Park Street School, in Nashwaaksis, and then for many years at the Law Library at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton.

Visitation will take place on Thursday, September 4^th, 2025, from 6 – 8 pm at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB.

Her funeral will be celebrated on Friday, September 5^th, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 630 Union St. in Fredericton at 10:30 am with Father John Jennings officiating. Funeral service to be followed by a short reception at the church, then interment at St. Joseph’s cemetery in Saint John following the reception.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Jeanne will be remembered for her kindness, sense of humor, and dedication to family.
