Obituary of Laurene Evelyn Winter

Please share a memory of Laurene to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

1942-04-15 to 2025-08-16

It is with deep regret we announce the death of Laurene (Lolly or Laurie) Evelyn Winter. Laurie’s two-year battle with cancer was taken on with the same aggression she applied during this time to another dozen or so fabulous art projects and the maintenance of all her friendships.

Born 1942-04-15, the first child of Dorothy and Ralph Holmes, Laurie is survived by daughter Marilyn, sons Morgan and Peter, and nine grandchildren. She also leaves behind sisters Elaine and Barbara, and brothers Richard, Michael, Kenneth, James, Laurie and Paul. She was predeceased by younger brother Steven and younger sister Betty.

Although born in New Brunswick, Laurie spent much of her junior years in Quebec with her father and his growing new family, ultimately working in banking in Montreal. When she moved to Fredericton as a young lady, she was a bank teller on the UNB Campus and became close with her mother’s new family, the Corbetts. She ultimately moved to Calgary and had a stint at clerical work for the petroleum industry. She also found enjoyment as a singer, volunteering for professional musicians and singing for charity. Soon, she moved to Didsbury, AB and raised a family with Henry Winter, while also pursuing art and the teaching of art.

Attending art classes at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and seminars with well-known artists and teachers from the western US and Canada gave her realistic art style a deepness of colour and brilliance that set her work apart. Her paintings became a marketable commodity far and wide. Her work have been exhibited in juried shows throughout Alberta, British Columbia and the Maritimes, and can be found in homes and businesses internationally.

After the death of her mother in 1992, her New Brunswick siblings decided life was too boring and convinced Lolly to return to live among them. Everything picked up quite well, and Lolly cemented old friendships while managing many new ones.

Her time here also allowed her to participate in various Fredericton choruses and singing groups, most notably the Elm City Echoes. Her friends and family knew her best, however, for her ability to provide spontaneous entertainment with both song and comedy.

There will be no public service.
