Obituary of Hendrik Gerrit Rompelman
The passing of Hendrik (Henk) Gerrit Rompelman of Fredericton, NB, occurred on June 18, 2025, at Shannex, Medley Hall in Fredericton, NB. Henk was born on October 8, 1930, in Den Haag, the Netherlands, son of the late Gerrit J. Rompelman and Alida S. (Walison) Rompelman, spending 1941-1948 years in Haarlem. He married the love of his life Paulina (deRuiter) in 1960, and they welcomed their daughter, Lilian Astrid on August 3, 1961. In April 1967, the young family (including their Siamese cat) immigrated to Canada and settled in Fredericton.
After naval duty and finishing studies at trade school, Henk's began his career with Phillips & Co and was stationed in Venezuela for almost three years. When back in the Netherlands he met, and married Paulina and they settled in Dieren, NL. A few months after their arrival in Canada, Henk joined the Province of New Brunswick and worked as electrician and electrical inspector until his retirement in 1992. Henk was also deeply technical and detail oriented. There were few problems he could not solve or gadgets he could not fix or improve.
Henk is survived by his daughter, Lilian (Parker Ketch); his grandchildren: Jessica and Matthew Ketch; great grandchildren: Jaxon LaPointe, Raynor and Harleen Ketch (and their mother Robin LaPointe); niece: Esther Snoep; nephew: Edwin Snoep (Pauline Kuiken) and their son Victor; brother-in-law: Cees Snoep and sister-in-law: Belia Snoep. He is also survived by his companion (cat) Chester! He was predeceased by his wife, Paulina; sister Alida Winkelman and brother-in-law, Willem Winkelman.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff at Medley Hall. Also, many heartfelt thanks to "Henk's Crew". Henk would not have been able to stay in his own home as long as he did without their dedication and love.
Visitation will be held at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton on Monday, June 23, 2025, from 3-5 pm. A short reflection and prayer time will take place at 4 pm.
For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer Society of New Brunswick or Shannex, Medley Hall. Personal condolences may be shared online at www.yorkfh.com.
Henk asked the following to be shared upon his death:
I would like to say my last goodbye to my family and friends. I have tried to be a responsible person as humanly possible but have made some mistakes and failed sometimes. Life is certainly not easy but by the reflections of the past it has become clear that all my situations and experiences helped develop me into the person I became later in life. I had the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life in the right places at the right times - some becoming mentors, very good friends and my wonderful wife, Paulina. She became my supportive partner and best fiend for nearly 60 years! We had so much in common and I was so lucky! She predeceased me in December 2019 and has been forever in my heart. I also want to thank those people in my life who enable me to finish this journey in a responsible way. I never could have done this myself. Real friendships need no label. For this I am so very thankful!
Let Me Go
When I come to the end of the road;
And the sun has set for me
I want no rite in a gloom filled room
why cry for a soul set free?
Zoveel herinneringen, zoveel meegemaakt
een voor een verdwenen, langzaam weggevaagd.
