Obituary of John Herbert Lomax

John Herbert Lomax of Stanley, New Brunswick, passed away peacefully on May 21st, 2025, at the age of 92. Born August 5th, 1932, in Toronto, Ontario, John lived a life marked by family, service, community, and care for others.

John served as a member of the Canadian Army for over 18 years, working mainly as a cook. He deployed overseas to Germany twice, and to Egypt and Korea. Following his military career, John continued his passion for cooking as he worked at Sunnybrook and York-Finch hospitals in Toronto, as well as Victoria Public Hospital in Fredericton and Nashwaak Villa in Stanley. At the Villa, John took pride in preparing homecooked meals and special treats for the seniors in his community.

John was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Beaverbrook Branch No. 80 and was active in the Blue Helmets Inc., and NATO Veterans Organization. He was also involved in his local community, serving as Past President of the Nashwaak Curling Club, Past Chairman of the Upper Nashwaak Community Outreach Inc., volunteer for the St. John Ambulance service for Stanley and area, and a longtime member of Hillcrest United Church in Stanley. His volunteer work and leadership in Scouts Canada were also central to his life.

John is survived by his son Bob Lomax (Bryna Warshawsky), son Irvine Humble (Diane), sister Susan Chemerys, and six grandchildren: Shelley Humble, Sandy Humble, Michelle Ryan (Josh), Stephanie Seymour (Nick), Joshua Lomax (Nicole Duguay), and Michael Lomax. He also leaves behind his six favourite great-grandchildren: Kelsey Brewer, Tyson Humble, Chloe Brewer, Luke Ryan, Owen Craig, and Garrett Seymour. He will be fondly remembered by his special friends and chosen family, Derwin and Cathy Fullarton and their families.

John was predeceased by his beloved wife Ella (nee Buchanan), daughter Margaret Hiscock (John), son Eldon Humble, and his parents, Robert and Beatrice (nee Smith) Lomax.

Thank you to the staff of 3 East of the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital for your care of John over the past 10 weeks.

Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, New Brunswick on Sunday May 25th, 2025, from 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm. Legion members of Beaverbrook Branch #80, and all other Legion members are asked to assemble for Legion Tribute Service at 1:45pm. A Celebration of Life will take place Monday May 26th, 2025, at 1pm, at Hillcrest United Church, 139 Graveyard Hill, Stanley New Brunswick, with Pastor Chris Walker officiating. Interment following the service. Personal condolences can be shared at www.yorkfh.com. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to York Funeral Home.
