Obituary of Winston Franklin Mitchell

Please share a memory of Winston to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Winston Franklin Mitchell of Fredericton NB. Winston passed at the age of 81 on May 19, 2025 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Named after Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt, he was born on August 12th, 1943 to the late Ida (Allaby) and Robert Mitchell.

Winston was a dedicated employee of NB Power, working as an Operator, Shift Supervisor, and professional stationary Engineer. He worked at power plants in Chatham and Dalhousie before he and wife Del returned to Fredericton in 1990 where he, because of his extensive operations experience, provided invaluable support for the design of the control systems for Belledune, Dalhousie and Point Lepreau plants.

After retirement he and Del took up golf and they spent many happy hours together on the course. He occasionally played in Maui where he spent his winters enjoying the sunshine and the camaraderie of his many friends. His last trip was Feb to the end of April this year!

Winston had a special bond with animals, especially dogs, and would usually have a pocketful of treats for those he met on his walks. He was a loyal customer at Speedbumps where he formed lasting friendships over countless hours.

But overall Winston was a loving husband who deeply mourned his beloved wife Del, a devoted son, brother and friend. His warmth and humour will be missed by all who knew him.

Winston is survived by his sisters, Linda Hepner (Al McMillan) and Kathy Powers (Rick); brother, Bob Mitchell (Kay); sister-in-law, Lois Ogilvie; several nieces and nephews. Winston was predeceased by his parents, his wife Del and his brother George Mitchell.

As per Winston's wishes, there will be no funeral service. A Celebration of Life for family and friends will take place on June 7 between 2:00 and 5:00 PM at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Diabetes Association, Fredericton SPCA, the Endowment Fund of the United Way of Central NB, or to a charity of donor’s choice.
