Obituary of James "Jim" Hanusiak

HANUSIAK, James Rudolph

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James (Jim) Rudolph Hanusiak of Fredericton, Friday May 9, 2025, at the age of 70.

Jim is survived by his mother, Dorothy Hanusiak, brother Michael (Deborah) Hanusiak, sister Heather (Bill) Hogan, nieces Meaghan (Mike) Gourdeau, Laura (Ryan) Hanusiak, nephews Josh (Sam) Hanusiak and Sean Hogan as well as great nieces, Sadie Hogan and Addy Gourdeau and great nephew, Liam Gourdeau. He is predeceased by his father, Rudolph Hanusiak.

Jim lived a full and rewarding life. From his early days playing rugby and lacrosse in Fredericton to his studies and early career pursuits in aquaculture, Jim followed a wonderful path both in Canada and the United States.

It’s from his time in aquaculture, that he took the bold step to open a restaurant in Halifax in 1997. Epicurious Morsels became a favoured place to eat in the North End, highlighted by his renowned seafood and smoked salmon. Over the course of nearly 20 years, his restaurant was featured five times in Canada’s, “Top 100 Places to Eat”. This was a remarkable achievement for which he was always quick to point out his wonderful staff, especially his long-time sous chef, Jen.

In 2018, he decided to retire from the business and focus on more leisurely pursuits like fishing, kayaking, and biking. Never one to forget friends and family, he was always available for family dinners in Halifax, Fredericton, or the family cottage in Cassie Cape.

In 2022, Jim decided to return to Fredericton and reconnect with old friends from years gone by. He was so happy to be able to spend more time with our mother and had a standing dinner date on Sunday evenings.

There will be no visitation by request of the family. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated from Holy Family Parish, 1500 Hanwell Road, Fredericton, NB on Friday, May 23, 2025 at 12 Noon with Father Bill Brennan as celebrant. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Diabetes Canada. Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com
