Obituary of Hal Wade Merrill

It is with deepest sorrow, we annouce the passing of Hal Wade Merrill of Charter's Settlement, NB, husband of Tracey (Harper) Merrill, occurred on March 14, 2025 at Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital.  Born on July 2, 1964 in Fredericton, NB,  he was the son of Maxine (Dorcas) Merrill and the late Elwood John Merrill. 

Hal worked as a Highway Designer with the Department of Transportation. He had many accomplishments, being a three-time Paralympian, being in the New Brunswick sports hall of fame, two-time athlete of the year, competed in Barcelona, Atlanta, and Sydney, Australia. He competed in numerous wheelchair basketball and rugby competitions, but his biggest accomplishment was mentoring young people with spinal cord injuries.

 

Hal is survived by his wife, Tracey Merrill, and son, Ian Merrill, both of Charter’s Settlement, NB; his grand-dog, Koby; brother, Boyd Merrill (Tracy) of Conception Bay South; his father-in-law, Ronald Harper (Lorna); several nieces, nephews, and cousins.


He was predeceased his mentor and coach, Leroy Washburn.
 

A visitation will take place at Faith Baptist Church, 525 New Maryland Hwy, New Maryland, NB on Wednesday, March 19, 2025 from 6 to 8 PM. A Celebration of Life will take place the following day, March 20, 2025 at the Faith Baptist Church at 2 PM with Rev Kelly Burke officiating. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Sports NB or SPCA.  Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com.
