Obituary of Wayne Douglas Smith
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Wayne Douglas Smith also known as “Smitty” who passed away in the presence of his loving wife Sheryl Lynn (Chase) Smith at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital in Fredericton, NB on March 5, 2025. Born on August 6, 1947, in Saint John, NB, Wayne was the cherished son of the late Cora (Weade) and Merton Smith.
Wayne leaves behind a loving family; his daughters, Lynnette Brewer (Joel) and Karen Bell (Mike); granddaughters Ellen Brewer, Leah Brewer-Bilerman, Maggie Gilmore (Eric), Kilee Gallagher (Mike) and Morgan Lord (Mike); great-grandchildren Nora and Kace Gallagher, and Hazel and Holly Lord; his sister-in-law Donna Estey (Ray); siblings Karen McIntire and Adam Raeburn (Cheryl); special cousin Arlo MacPherson (Gail); his nephews Clint (Jacqueline) and Brock Estey; and nieces Krista Dionne, Meghan House (Aaron), and Allie Daigle (Matt); along with several cousins. He is predeceased by his sibling Sharon Raeburn.
Wayne’s passion for life was evident in his many interests and contributions. He was an avid enthusiast of antique cars and NASCAR. Many may know Wayne as their chauffeur to their wedding, prom, or other formal event in his 1956 black Chevrolet or his 1959 burgundy pick-up truck. He was also a dedicated chaplain of Speedway 660 for many years, even before that he played a vital role in the creation of the rescue crew at the racetrack. Wayne’s career as a firefighter began in Marysville, later serving at the Station on McLaren Ave in Fredericton. He finished out his career as part of the Fire Prevention Team.
Wayne and Sheryl were past members of the Marysville Baptist Church, where they were committed youth leaders for many years, later becoming active members of Hope City Church.
His love for the outdoors was highlighted by his time spent hunting, fishing, and four-wheeling at his camp on the Dungarven River.
Wayne treasured every moment with his granddaughters and great-grandchildren and was a father figure to many beyond his own two daughters. His passion for community also led him to organize a floor hockey league and excel as a bowler.
A testament to his caring nature, Wayne devoted himself to caring for his mother after his father passed away when Wayne was just 13 years old, a mission he undertook with love until her passing in 2012.
