Obituary of Steve Hoyt
J. Stephen Hoyt, MScF, RPF, 80, passed away peacefully at Hospice House Fredericton on February 1, 2025 after a short battle with cancer.
Steve will be remembered by his wife of 43 years, Lorraine; sons Jeff Hoyt (Danielle Hogan) and Jon Hoyt-Hallett; daughter, Laura Forbes (Glen Forbes); grandchildren, Mikaya Hoyt-Hogan, Tate Hoyt-Hogan, Addison Forbes and Oliva Forbes. He is survived by his brother David Hoyt (Bea Hoyt), brother-law Jerrie Fowler and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father, Harold Hoyt and mother Margaret Hoyt (Munro) and twin sister, Shirley Fowler.
Steve was born in 1944 in Fredericton New Brunswick and attended Fredericton High School and the University of New Brunswick where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry in 1967 and his Masters of Science in Forestry in 1972. Steve worked for the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources between 1967 and 1990 in various capacities including Assistant Director of the Forest Utilization Branch. In 1990 Steve accepted a position at the Maritime Forest Ranger School (later becoming the Maritime College of Forest Technology) as the Assistant Director of Continuing Education and went on to become the Director of the School in 1994, a position he held until his retirement in December 2004.
During his forestry career Steve served on or chaired professional and accreditation boards at both the provincial and national levels including the Canadian Standards Association Technical Committee on Scaling Roundwood, the Association of Registered Professional Foresters of New Brunswick, and Chairman of the Canadian Forestry Accreditation Board. One of Steve’s proudest moments was being inducted into the New Brunswick Forestry Hall of Fame in 2006. Steve and his father Harold (1989) represented the first father/son combination in the Forestry Hall of Fame.
Outside of his work life Steve loved curling and was a dedicated and long-standing member of the Fredericton Curling Club. He loved his weekly curling matches with the gang. Steve and Lorraine were long time season ticket holders and ardent fans of the UNB Reds Men’s Hockey Team. In the summers he enjoyed spending time in his gardens and at the cottage at Magaguadavic Lake. No matter what time of year you could always find Steve in the stands at one of his grandchildren’s many sporting events. Steve was also a member of the Marysville United Church. He was always ready to take on a project and always there to lend a hand if anyone needed help.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Hospice House Fredericton for excellent care as well as the nurses and doctors on 4SE at the Dr. Chalmers Hospital.
Arrangements have been entrusted to York Funeral Home. Visitation will take place between 3 and 6pm on Tuesday February 4, 2025 at York Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers the family is recommending donations to Hospice House Fredericton (Palliative Care Resource Network Inc.) or the Canadian Cancer Society. Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com
