Gerald loved stories. Here is one from his youth that gives a glimpse of the county that shaped us growing up.
In the mid eighties, Gerald's car was in the shop so he found himself driving a rental car. Not just any car but a Datsun that had recently been rebranded as a Nissan. It was a "fuel efficient" Sentra or Stanza. We understood that "fuel efficient" was a euphemism for underpowered so Gerald affectionately gave it the nickname the hissin' Nissan. It rhymed when he said it.
Being a generous and caring big brother, he let two of his brothers, Quincy and I think it was Nathan, have the car for the day on a sunny summer weekend.
Everyone knows that when you get access to a rental car it's every young man's duty, an unwritten rule, to abuse the hell out of it.
That was our mission. Also, Gerald unwittingly set the precedent for how to care for the little car when he washed it at the Beaver Brook public car wash. He drove it into the rocky bottomed brook near Brookton road in water up to the door handles.
Quincy did most of the driving that day on the road trip. We drove as far as the Little's cottage with the in-ground pool, in Shediac Bridge. Quincy was always a man of faith and that day he had faith that God would protect us as we passed a car on a fairly blind turn and passed a Sunday driver on the impossibly narrow Gunningsville bridge, which took the little Nissan a painfully long time. We prayed for Quincy to deliver us as we traveled like the Duke boys through Hazard County North in our getaway car. Our prayers were heard as we arrived home safe and sound with not a scratch on Gerald's rental.
And it arrived mechanically sound. Or did it? The next morning when Gerald went to start it, smoke belched from the engine and exhaust. "What did you do to my car?" he yelled to the nearest available brother. "Nothing" was the truthy answer. Nothing permanent anyways. The night before, one of our co-travellers thought he would prank Gerald by pouring motor oil down the carburetor. Gerald took it well. He had a great sense of humor.. I'll miss that.

Our condolences from Hank and I to Gerald's family. He was bigger than life and we will always remember and cherish our lively discussions when he visited us in Moncton. Everytime we hear "Copy?" we think of him. He always left a lasting impression. RIP buddy!

My heart goes out to my cousins Jeremy and Kimberly! Your father stayed with us out here in Fort Saskatchewan for work. He was always bragging about his children and grandchildren. He had so much love for you guys and was so proud of the people you had become. Gerald had such a huge heart and always treated us like gold. He will definitely be missed by many people. Sending love and prayers to Jeremy, Kimberly and your families! Xoxo

Gerald would attend our church in Calgary when he was out here, and all came to know he knew me back to church in Fredericton.
Gerald was also out here and a part of helping the church get started in the early eighties under Pastor McKeen. A very nice communion set is the only thing tangible in the church that goes back that far, and it has his name on it as a donnee.
Gerald left a testimony in the West that you go to church even if you are alone and a long ways from home. Thank you Gerald for this help.
